The New Forest National Park attracts thousands of visitors every year because of the stunning scenery and abundant wildlife, but for golfers there is also a great deal to offer.

Barton on Sea Golf Club is located on the south coast of  England, close to the towns of  Bournemouth,  Poole and Christchurch in  Hampshire, England.

The club was founded over a century ago back in 1897 and as with many courses, it was initially laid out as a nine hole course which was situated on a cliff just to the west of the course we know today. Golf at the time was becoming increasingly popular and the idea was to provide some entertainment for the guests of the Barton Court Hotel. The course remained active until 1909. Due to the hotel and surrounding land changing hands several time, the golf courses also changed hands and were frequently rebuilt, relocated and renamed until 1932 when the 18 hole course know today was designed by  Harry S Colt.

Although today the course is of a 27 hole layout, in true testament to Harry Colt, many of his original 18 holes from the 1932 installation are still in existence and are enjoyed by golfers of all abilities. A challenging course which offers stunning views across the cliffs of Hampshire and out across towards the Solent and  Isle of Wight, the course is certainly a true test for all abilities. Those newer to the sport may find it particularly challenging thanks to the strong winds which can often sweep across the cliffs and even for those professionals, whilst ball control may be accurate, the wind can often intervene and create some rather wayward shots!

Set in the heart of the New Forest, Brokenhurst Manor is just a short drive from the main stretch of road into Bournemouth – perfect for golfers who want to enjoy a round on their way to one of the South’s top tourist destinations.

The course was originally designed by the legendary Harry Colt and it is a testament to his design back in 1915 that it remains a stern test for the modern game. Known for its superb condition and measuring 6220 yards in length, the undulating layout is set in beautiful forest surroundings that are perfect for a competitive match or a relaxing sociable game.

The golf course at Stoneham was opened in 1908 with a match between J.H. Taylor and James Braid, two great names of the era, having been designed by Willie Park Junior. Park’s portfolio includes Sunningdale’s Old Course, but Stoneham is among his less well known successes.

Stoneham has in the past held high profile events including the European Tour’s Dunlop Masters, but at 6,392 yards, it is considered too short by today’s standards. Against a standard scratch of 70, Stoneham remains a stern test, and with a set of holes whose character varies drastically throughout, there is never a dull moment.

Set in charming surroundings, Stoneham is one of the south coast’s real gems, and is an essential part of any good New Forest golf tour.
